Start here: build a safer streaming setup

A safer setup is not just a kids profile. It is a plan for what can be watched, who can change that decision, and which devices follow the rules.

Choose your boundary first

For a child, decide which services, titles, and age ratings are appropriate. For yourself, decide whether you want fewer unwanted recommendations, a meaningful pause before changing settings, or no access to a particular service.

Do not treat a rating as a promise that a program is free of sexual content, violence, or other material you want to avoid. Netflix, for example, lets you block individual titles as well as set a maximum rating. ¹

Set up three layers

1. Restrict the service. Choose the appropriate profile and viewing limits. Protect unrestricted profiles and new-profile creation wherever supported.
2. Protect changes. For children, keep the parental PIN private. For an adult choosing accountability, agree voluntarily on who holds a separate restriction PIN. Keep a legitimate recovery plan. Netflix documents account-verification methods that can reset its profile lock, so a PIN holder alone is not an unbreakable boundary. ²
3. Check the device. Review other apps, browsers, guest access, and account switching. Google TV, for example, provides a separate kids-profile exit lock. ³

Check your setup

Using the everyday profile, try opening a harmless title above the chosen rating, changing profiles, and accessing settings. Check each device and any downloaded library. The goal is to inspect whether permission is required, not to expose anyone to explicit content.
