Netflix parental controls: restrict titles and lock every profile

Netflix has several useful controls, but they solve different problems. A viewing limit controls available titles. A profile PIN controls entry into a profile. For a stronger setup, use both.

Recommended setup

1. Choose a viewing limit. In a browser, open your Netflix account's profile settings and the parental-control settings for the profile you use. Set the maximum maturity level you want available. A Kids profile is another option for a child's viewing. ¹³
2. Block specific titles. In the same parental-control area, add any individual shows or movies you do not want available. This is useful when a title falls below your rating limit but still crosses your personal boundary. Save the changes. ¹
3. Lock unrestricted profiles. Open each unrestricted profile's Profile Lock setting and create a four-digit PIN. Do not leave an alternative adult profile unlocked. ²
4. Protect new profiles. On the main, first profile, enable the option that requires its PIN to add another profile. This extra setting belongs to the main profile, not every profile. ²
5. Refresh your devices. Switch profiles or sign out and back in if the changes are not showing. ²

Good to know

Netflix allows profile-lock changes after account verification, including an account password or a code sent to the account's email or phone. Someone who controls those recovery methods may be able to change the lock. Extra member profiles do not support Profile Lock. ²

For adult self-protection, agree on the restriction PIN and recovery plan with a trusted person. Do not mistake that agreement for a technical guarantee against every account-owner action.

Check your setup

From the restricted profile, check that a blocked title is unavailable. Then try entering every unrestricted profile and adding a profile. Confirm that the expected PIN prompt appears on the devices you actually use. Test downloaded viewing too, rather than assuming the online experience covers every situation.
