Use Microsoft Family Safety for a child

Filters websites and searches in Microsoft Edge for a child who signs in with their own Microsoft account.

Using it anyway? Here are the steps.

You’ll need
  • A Microsoft family group, with you as organizer.
  • Your child's own Microsoft account, used to sign in on the PC.
  1. Step 1: Open your child's Edge settings

Go to: Family Safetyyour childGo to overviewEdge

Sign in to Family Safety on the web. Go to overview is in the three-dot menu next to your child.

  2. Step 2: Turn on filtering

Turn on Filter inappropriate websites and searches. Mature websites are blocked and Bing searches are filtered.

With filtering on, Family Safety blocks other browsers on your child's device, so browsing happens in Edge.

  3. Step 3: Block specific sitesOptional

Add them under Blocked sites. To allow only a short list of sites, turn on Only use allowed websites.

Set up a free DNS filter

Cloudflare's free 1.1.1.1 for Families refuses known adult domains. You enter its addresses for each connection the PC uses.

Using it anyway? Here are the steps.

You’ll need
  • Windows 11 and an administrator account.
  1. Step 1: Open the DNS settings

Go to: StartSettingsNetwork & internetPropertiesDNS server assignmentEdit

Choose Properties for the network you are connected to.

  2. Step 2: Switch to Manual

    Change Automatic (DHCP) to Manual.

  3. Step 3: Enter the family addresses

Turn on IPv4 and IPv6, enter the addresses below, then select Save.

1.1.1.1 for FamiliesMalware and adult content
    IPv4 · Preferred DNS1.1.1.3
    IPv4 · Alternate DNS1.0.0.3
    IPv6 · Preferred DNS2606:4700:4700::1113
    IPv6 · Alternate DNS2606:4700:4700::1003

Use only these addresses. Cloudflare's standard 1.1.1.1 doesn't filter adult content.

  4. Step 4: Repeat for each connection

If the PC also connects another way, such as Ethernet as well as Wi-Fi, repeat these steps for that connection.

Questions and troubleshooting

Changes, the test address, Windows 10, work PCs
You want to unblock a site or remove LockedWeb
Request it in your dashboard. Protection stays on during the 72-hour wait, and you can cancel the request at any time. After 72 hours, a one-time code completes the change. On a family device, that code goes to the parent who manages it.
Cloudflare's test address still opens
Check the four addresses on the connection you are using, then restart the browser.
The PC runs Windows 10
The free-filter steps are for Windows 11. Windows 10 uses a different settings path. For LockedWeb, your dashboard's Windows setup lists current requirements before you download.
It is a work or school PC
Ask your IT administrator first. Managed PCs often have filtering set centrally, and installing software or changing network settings may not be allowed.
You want someone told about changes
Name an optional accountability contact in LockedWeb. They hear about requests to loosen protection, never your browsing. See accountability for couples.
