Set up a free filter on a personal Chromebook

Set your Wi-Fi network's name servers to Cloudflare's free 1.1.1.1 for Families. It changes the Chromebook's connection, not one browser.

Using it anyway? Here are the steps.

  1. Step 1: Open your network settings

    Go to: SettingsNetworkWi-Fiyour network

Select the network you are connected to.

  2. Step 2: Enter custom name servers

    Go to: NetworkName servers

Choose Custom name servers and enter the two addresses below.

1.1.1.1 for FamiliesMalware and adult content
    Name server 11.1.1.3
    Name server 21.0.0.3
  3. Step 3: Repeat for each Wi-Fi network

Each network keeps its own setting. Repeat these steps for every Wi-Fi network the Chromebook uses.

Questions and troubleshooting

School Chromebooks, ChromeOS Flex, Android apps, the test address
It is a school or work Chromebook
Its administrator sets the policies, and your changes may be blocked or reset. Ask them, and bring the device model, the account you sign in with and what you want filtered.
It runs ChromeOS Flex
Flex runs ChromeOS on Windows and Mac hardware and differs from Chromebooks in some features. Run the checks above before you rely on a setup.
You use Android apps or Linux on it
Run the same check inside them too.
Cloudflare's test address still opens
Check the two addresses on the network you are using, then reopen Chrome.
Which account to check
The one the person actually signs in with. For a child, that is their supervised Google Account.
