Google SafeSearch: choose Filter, not Blur
Use the strongest SafeSearch mode and check who can change it.
Google SafeSearch has multiple modes. When the goal is to reduce explicit results, choose the filtering option rather than relying on blurred images.
Recommended setup
- Open SafeSearch settings. Use Google Search's profile or settings menu to find SafeSearch.
- Choose Filter. Google describes this as filtering explicit results. Blur only blurs explicit images and may still show explicit text and links.
- Inspect the lock state. The settings page can show whether SafeSearch is managed and who manages it. A lock is different from a preference the signed-in user can freely change.
- For a child, review Family Link. Use the child-account management options appropriate to the child's age and region. Google documents parental management for supported child accounts. 1
Good to know
SafeSearch works on Google Search. It does not filter everything inside another website, a streaming app, or a different search engine. Google also describes it as an identification-and-filtering system, not a reason to stop reviewing the wider setup. 1
For adult self-protection, check whether you can simply change the mode. A managed device or network setting is a different arrangement from voluntarily selecting Filter in your own account.
Check your setup
Open SafeSearch settings in the browser you use daily and confirm the mode and management status. Check other browser profiles and devices separately. Review which other search apps or engines are available.
You do not need to perform graphic searches to complete this check. Verify the configuration, the authorization required to change it, and the scope of the devices or accounts it covers.
Then continue with the streaming and social-app guides. Search filtering and in-app content controls solve different parts of the problem.
