Spotify: block explicit content and check family settings
Turn off explicit playback, but recognize that a label filter cannot guarantee every item is appropriate.
Your content boundary can include audio as well as video. Spotify provides an explicit-content setting, with an additional management option for Premium Family plan managers.
Recommended setup
- On a phone or tablet: Open your profile, then Settings and privacy. Under Content and display, turn off Allow Explicit Content.
- On desktop: Open the profile menu and Settings, then turn off explicit-rated playback in the explicit-content section.
- For Premium Family: The plan manager can open the family-plan page, select a member, and turn explicit content off for that member. Review this option instead of relying only on a locally selected preference. 1
- Choose the library deliberately. Review followed shows, saved material, and playlists. A small collection you have reviewed may fit a child's needs better than unrestricted discovery.
Good to know
Spotify's control works with explicit labels. Spotify says these labels depend on information supplied by rights holders. Missing or inaccurate labeling can therefore matter, and the absence of an explicit tag is not a personal endorsement of the content. 1
Do not describe the setting as a guarantee about every podcast topic, audiobook, image, or video experience. This article covers the explicit-label control, not every separate content setting Spotify may offer.
For adult self-protection, check who can change the setting. A preference on an independently controlled account is different from a restriction managed through a family plan.
Check your setup
Confirm that a clearly labeled explicit item is unavailable without playing it. Inspect the setting on the account actually used and review any connected listening device. Spotify notes that changes when using Spotify Connect take effect with the next playback. 1
Recheck after changing plans, adding a family member, or switching the account used on a shared speaker or device.
