Instagram and Facebook: teen protections and sensitive-content settings

For social apps, account age, contact settings, and recommendations all matter. Review the account actually being used rather than relying on a setting from someone else's screenshot.

Recommended setup

1. For a teen, verify the account setup. Use the correct birth date and review the Teen Account protections available in Instagram or Facebook. Meta has introduced teen-focused safeguards across Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger. ¹²
2. Connect appropriate parental supervision. Complete the available family-supervision setup together and confirm which changes require parental approval for that teen. Do not assume the same rules apply to every age and region. ¹²
3. For an adult on Instagram, reduce sensitive recommendations. Find Sensitive Content in settings and choose the most restrictive option offered to the account. ³
4. Review follows and contacts. Remove accounts that regularly cross your boundary. Review who can contact the account and how you will respond to unwanted messages.
5. Check each app separately. Review Instagram, Facebook, and Messenger individually. Do not treat shared ownership or linked accounts as evidence that every safety setting has been synchronized.

Good to know

Teen protections and sensitive-content preferences reduce particular kinds of exposure. They should not be described as a filter that guarantees every post, comment, message, or linked website is appropriate. ¹²³

For an adult who can immediately change a preference, the setting provides a cleaner default rather than a dependable waiting period. Decide whether that is enough for the boundary you are trying to keep.

Check your setup

Reopen the relevant settings on the actual account. Confirm the supervision connection where applicable, review recommended content, and inspect contact permissions. Check any alternate account or browser session separately.

A private account is not, by itself, a content-selection plan. Make separate decisions about what the person can discover, receive, and intentionally open.
