Reddit: turn off mature content instead of just blurring it

Disable mature-content access in the account settings and check what happens outside that signed-in account.

Reddit's mature-content preference is worth reviewing, but it is not a parental lock. Start by disabling access to mature content, not merely making previews less visible.

Recommended setup

  1. On the website: Open account Settings, then Preferences, and turn off the option to show mature or 18+ content.
  2. On Android: Open the app settings, find the viewing options, and turn off the option to show NSFW content.
  3. On iPhone or iPad: Reddit's current instructions direct users to the website's preferences to change this setting, then restart the app when needed. Do not rely on an old guide that only points to iPhone system settings. 1
  4. Clean up your own access points. Leave communities and remove saved links that do not fit your boundary. Choose a small set of useful communities instead of treating every discovery feed as necessary.

Good to know

Reddit documents this as an account preference and says the saved setting carries across platforms for that account. That does not make it an independently managed parental PIN. 1

Blurring an image is not the same safety goal as preventing access to the material. Similarly, an account preference should not be assumed to govern signed-out use, a separate account, or linked websites.

For adult self-protection, decide honestly whether an immediately editable setting provides enough friction. A preference you can reverse in the same session may be useful for accidental exposure but insufficient for the boundary you actually want.

Check your setup

Confirm the setting on the website and in the app after reopening it. Inspect whether it can be changed without additional authorization. Review signed-out and alternate-account access without deliberately searching for explicit content.

When the service cannot support your chosen boundary, consider blocking or removing access rather than relying on blur alone.
