TikTok Restricted Mode and Family Pairing

Reduce exposure to mature content, then decide whether the remaining experience fits your boundary.

A short-video feed needs a different approach from a handpicked movie library. Begin with TikTok's built-in content controls, then decide whether the result is appropriate for the person using it.

Recommended setup

  1. Open content settings. From the profile menu, open Settings and privacy, then Content preferences.
  2. Enable Restricted Mode. Follow the displayed setup and passcode or verification prompts. Use the current in-app instructions when the wording differs from this guide. 1
  3. For an eligible teen, review Family Pairing. Set up the parent and teen connection together and inspect the content and account controls offered for that account. Confirm which settings the parent can manage instead of assuming every account has identical options. 2
  4. Make an access decision. Decide whether the account should remain available, be limited to particular times, or be removed from the device. This is your boundary decision, not a feature TikTok chooses for you.

Good to know

Restricted Mode is intended to reduce exposure to potentially unsuitable content. Do not interpret that purpose as a promise that every remaining video, creator, or interaction is appropriate. 1

For adults, inspect whether the setting can be reversed immediately and who controls any recovery method. For parents, use accurate age information and the supervision options actually supported for the teen's account.

Check your setup

Reopen the app and verify Restricted Mode. Check the available settings from both sides of a paired setup, where applicable. Review other accounts and browser access separately.

Avoid using graphic searches to test the filter. A better check is whether the intended setting remains enabled, changes require the expected authorization, and the ordinary feed still fits your agreed boundaries.
