Roku parental controls: account PIN, channel ratings, and live TV

A Roku PIN is not a universal filter for every installed streaming app.

A Roku device can provide several routes to content. Review the account PIN, The Roku Channel, and the television's live-TV input separately.

Recommended setup

  1. Protect account actions. Sign in to your Roku account on the website and open its PIN and parental-control preferences. Set a PIN requirement for purchases, subscriptions, and adding apps on the device as appropriate. 1
  2. Set channel viewing limits. In the same account area, configure the parental-control rating level for The Roku Channel and Howdy on your Roku device. 12
  3. Review Roku TV live television. On a Roku TV, open Settings, then Parental controls, and set the separate controls for the Live TV input. Review rating limits and unrated programming. 2
  4. Configure other apps individually. Apply the Netflix, Disney+, or other provider's controls inside that service too.

Good to know

Roku says its channel viewing restrictions apply on the Roku device, not those services' website or mobile experience and not unrelated streaming apps. They require the appropriate signed-in use and do not apply in Guest Mode. Restricted titles may remain visible even when playback requires authorization. 2

The account PIN's protection for adding apps or making purchases is also not the same as requiring a PIN every time any existing app opens. 1

Check your setup

Inspect an above-limit title in The Roku Channel, try adding an app, and check the Live TV guide. Confirm the expected code prompt for each action rather than assuming they use identical controls.

Then review every other installed app, guest access, and the television's other inputs. When you discover another viewing route, add it to your setup checklist before considering the television ready for independent child use.
