YouTube Restricted Mode: what it filters and where to turn it on

YouTube's Restricted Mode can reduce exposure to potentially mature videos. It is a useful layer, not a promise that every available video will fit your family's or your personal standards. ¹²

Recommended setup

1. Enable the filter in the browser. Sign in, open the profile menu, choose Restricted Mode, and activate it.
2. Repeat on other viewing surfaces. Review the setting in every browser profile and device used for YouTube. YouTube documents Restricted Mode as a browser- or device-level setting, not a universal switch that automatically follows every session. ¹
3. For a child, review supervised options. Use the parental-management options available for the child's age, region, and account. Do not assume that linking any teenager's account creates the same restrictions as a younger child's supervised account. ¹

Good to know

Restricted Mode relies on YouTube's classification systems. It does not provide a custom guarantee about every topic, thumbnail, or live experience. YouTube also disables comments while the mode is enabled. ²

A voluntarily enabled setting that remains editable is not the same as a parent- or administrator-managed restriction. For adult self-protection, inspect who can change it and whether another browser or account sits outside your intended boundary.

Check your setup

Reopen YouTube on your phone, television, and computer. Confirm the displayed setting and whether it can be changed without authorization. Check signed-out access and other browser profiles as part of your audit.

Use account and setting checks rather than searching for explicit material to test the filter. When the result is not dependable enough, consider limiting the entire app or website instead.
