X (Twitter): sensitive media and search filter settings

On X, the sensitive-media preference and search filtering are separate checks. Review both, then decide whether the remaining experience fits your boundary.

Recommended setup

1. Use the website for the media setting. Open Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, and find Content you see. Turn off the option that permits media marked as sensitive. ¹
2. Review search settings. Open the search options and enable Hide sensitive content. Also keep the option to remove blocked and muted accounts from results enabled. X says these search settings apply across its web and mobile searches. ²
3. Review accounts you follow. Unfollow or block accounts that repeatedly cross your boundary. A setting is not a substitute for choosing which accounts you actively bring into your feed.

X's sensitive-media controls depend on how content is identified and handled by the platform. Do not treat a warning label or hidden search result as a guarantee that every unwanted image, post, or reply is excluded. ¹²

These ordinary account preferences can be changed by the account user. This guide does not describe a private parental PIN, an approved-post library, or a delay before settings can be loosened.

For parents, first decide whether use of the service is appropriate for the teen and whether its available controls meet the household boundary. For adults, decide whether preference filtering is enough or whether removing access is the more dependable choice.

Check your setup

Confirm both settings after reopening the app and website. Check whether changing accounts or signing out produces an experience you have not reviewed. Inspect settings and ordinary recommendations rather than using explicit searches as a test.
